The parties of my choice

• Свободная Россия. Движение в поддержку Демократии. Движение создано под руководством Владимира Буковского.

•     United Civil Front (UCF) - Exists since 2005. Headed by the world chess champion Garry Kasparov.

  Garry Kasparov is also the Chairman of Committee 2008 - an umbrella organization of the Russian democratic opposition, formed in January 2004 in response to the growing authoritarianism of President Vladimir Putin. The Committee's aim is to ensure free and fair presidential elections in 2008 and to prevent an appointment of a chosen Kremlin successor.

• Liberal Russia - Existed since spring 2002. Strongly opposes Putin's regime ("controlled democracy" and the rule of KGB). Started with the dissemination of a documentary film Assassination of Russia about apartment bombing in 1999 (most probably perpetrated by KGB to make a pretext for starting the second Chechen war and bringing Putin to power). It was financially supported by former "oligarch" and Kremlin insider Boris Berezovsky (who is now in exile in London).

  In 2003 Sergei Yushenkov, one of the party's leaders, was assassinated (most probably by Putin's FSB). The party split into the faction headed by Pokhmelkin (officially registered) and the rest of the party led by Berezovsky. At present the party is no longer active.

•     Democratic Union - a radical anti-Putin party. Headed by Ms. Novodvorskaya. On the site you can find full texts of her books, leaflets, a mock Russian national anthem, etc.

The two other pro-Western parties (each has support of about 4% of the electorate). :

• Yabloko ("Apple") - Left librals. Stresses the issues of human rights, democracy and conservation. Supported mostly by intelligentsia (scientific, educational workers, etc.). Headed by Grigoriy Yavlinsky.

• Union of Right Forces (SPS) - Right librerals. This party tends to co-operate with Putin's administration, though criticises it. Target groups: middle class and young upwardly mobile Russians. Key issues: small businesses, military reform, peaceful settlement in Chechnya, etc.

Other democracy-oriented political organisations

• Memorial - International Historical and Educational Society for Human Rights and Charity. Collects the GULAG evidence and helps the victims. Records human rights violations in Chechnya. See for example Walking through Grozny (map and photos).

• «За права человека» - Общероссийское общественное движение «За права человека». Создано в 1997 году. В состав Движения на данный момент входит свыше 120 региональных и местных правозащитных организаций . Уставной целью Общероссийского Движения является становление правового государства и развитие гражданского общества в России.

• Moscow Helsinki Group A well-known human rights group. The site includes books and documentary films.

• Mikhail Khodorkovsky Press Centre

• Sovest - On June 26, 2006, the "Sovest" group launched an international informational campaign against the persecution of Mikhail Khodorkovsky. The main purpose of this campaign is to obtain for Mikhaill Khodorkovsky recognition as a political prisoner. Our chief appellee is Amnesty International, an organization which despite the pleas of various human-rights organisations has not yet granted Michael Khodorkovsky acceptance as a political prisoner.
  

• Antimilitarist Radical Association - A small group. Strongly opposes the war in Chechnya and the Chinese rule in Tibet.

• Trepashkin.ru - Mikhail Trepashkin - a Moscow attorney and former FSB officer, imprisoned by Russian authorities for his investigation of FSB involvement in the Russian apartment bombings in September 1999.

• Правда Беслана (The Truth about Beslan) - сайт создан для того, чтобы собрать весь фактический материал, связанный с трагедией в северо-осетинском городе Беслан 1-3 сентября 2004 года.

• Демократическое движение "Мы" - WE democratic movement.

• Skaji.net (Say "No") - Web-based opposition force, created in 2005, that challenges Russians to reject the benefits reduction law and the unprofessional government. The site has a map pinpointing more than 80 Russian cities in which there have been protests against the new benefits law.

Mass media

•     Radio Svoboda - Radio Liberty/Free Europe in Russian. Primarily Russian politics (issues of democracy, human rights, war in Chechnya). Funded by the US government.

•     Novaya Gazeta - Russian democratic newspaper (comes out twice per week), critical of Putin's regime.

• Grani.ru - a Russian online news source critical of Putin's regime. Includes several projects, such as:

  • GraniTV.ru - Videos about opposition in Russia.

• RTVI - Independent news broadcasts in the Internet.

  International Russian-language television network, which broadcasts by satellite and cable in Europe, North America, Israel and CIS countries. The network's principal audience is the Russian-speaking community in these countries. In Russia the channel is accessible through internet. RTVi is owned by Vladimir Gusinsky, the founder of NTV, Russia's first independent TV network, which was taken over by the government in 2001. RTVi is staffed by many former NTV journalists.

  RTVi — международный русскоязычный телеканал, осуществляющий вещание в ряде государств СНГ, странах Балтии, Германии, Израиле, Великобритании, Испании, США, Канаде, Австралии и др. Общая аудитория телеканала составляет ок. 25 млн человек. В России программы RTVi доступны Интернет-вещания. Телекомпания была основана в 2002 году после закрытия российскими властями телекомпании ТВ-6. Главным акционером RTVi является один из основателей НТВ Владимир Гусинский. • Ekho Moskvy (Echo of Moscow) - a democratic radio station (RU).

• Inosmi.ru - Translations of articles from foreign press.

• Prague Watchdog - The most comprehensive resouce on the conflict in Cechnya. Articles in English, Russian and Czech. Excellent list of links.

• Kavkaz Center - Site of Chechen separatists. News and analyses.

• Prima News Agency - The Moscow Human Rights News Agency PRIMA distributes (both in Russian and English) news related to the human rights situation in Russia, the former Soviet Union, and abroad. PRIMA News Agency was founded in February 2000 on the basis of Express-Chronicle human rights newspaper, which has been published in Moscow since 1987.

• Moskovskiye novosti (Moscow News) - in 2006 it was bought by a businessman loyal to Putin, but you can still read the archives before that date. (RU)

• ИNАЧЕ - С 1996 года ИNАЧЕ издавался как бумажный журнал, а с 2004 года преобразован в сетевое издание. "Современная социокультурная ситуация в России характеризуется настроениями «стабильности» и тотальной «предсказуемости», которые успешно внедряют официальные медиа. В этих условиях вновь становится актуальной тематика Альтернативы (понятой в самом широком смысле), которая была заявлена нами еще при основании журнала. Обновленный портал видится нам одной из точек кристаллизации общественной мысли, выходящей за рамки «нового застоя». Но не просто «нонконформистской» и «несогласной», а предлагающей иные, утвердительные стратегии (в чем и состоит смысл альтернативности)."
